About the event

Autism in women is frequently under-recognized, misunderstood, and misdiagnosed due to longstanding diagnostic frameworks rooted in male-centric research and patriarchal norms. This three-hour training explores how Autism Spectrum Disorder often presents differently in women across the lifespan, including childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and later life transitions such as perimenopause. Participants will examine how masking, coping strategies, socialization, and societal expectations contribute to delayed or missed diagnoses, and how these patterns impact mental health outcomes.

This workshop will take a neuro-affirming and culturally responsive approach to understanding autism in women, addressing common misdiagnoses, ethical considerations in referral for assessment, and the limitations of the DSM-5-TR. Special attention will be given to the role of patriarchy, gender norms, and systemic bias in shaping symptom presentation and clinical interpretation. Clinicians will leave with practical tools to identify autistic traits more accurately, reduce harm, and support clients with greater clarity, validation, and ethical care.
