No slides. No lecture. A real conversation between Dr. Nancy Grechko and Caitlyn Kranich:
Dr. Nancy Grechko alongside Caitlyn Kranich, a licensed professional counselor and doctoral candidate with extensive personal and professional experience working with the medically complex population, examine the psychological impact of medical invalidation on women with chronic health conditions and how that manifests in the therapy office. Drawing from clinical insight and the most current research, the discussion highlights the effects of repeated dismissal by healthcare providers, including trauma responses, diminished self-trust, identity disruption, and other mental health concerns. Special attention is given to clinical implications, including how therapists can recognize signs of medical trauma, validate client experiences, and support the rebuilding of trust in both the body and the healthcare system.
Objectives:
Define medical invalidation and identify its presentation in women with chronic illness.
